J.Donnelly

Hello Everyone,
I had hoped to cover Sula this week.  However, as always time went too quickly...
Yet, there's always the Blog way to share.  As you're writing your papers this weekend, responding to "Study Questions" and annotating your reading from your respective expert, take a moment or two to send a "blog" our way.  Especially, if you have any "questions? comments! or concerns..."

There wer several of you that completed the study questions I issued on Wednesday.  I will be issuing you bonus points for being so diligent.  Thank you for making the special effort to complete within just 24 hours.
Take care everyone.  I'll see yousoon.
Ms.Donnelly

Hey, Ms. Donnelly
On Thursday you told us to hold on to the study questions over the weekend. But yeah...that's no big deal.
Anyway, how much are these "bonus points" worth? Is one bonus point the equivalent to one regular assignment point? Or are multiple bonus points equivalent to one assignment point?
If bonus points are equally as important as regular points, in what ways can we earn them?
I'm just curious. I wouldn't mind doing some additional work to boost my grade. I just need to know, specifically, how I can earn bonus points. A little clarification would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Everyone,
Good question about bonus points, Chloe. Bonus points earned are points beyond the cumulative scores of the regular assignments for Quarter 2. I recently provided a handout with scores for each assignment issued. These scores, along with journal points and the Sula novel assignments will be tabulated and averaged. The bonus points will be included in that total score. Bonus points do not replace class assignments, tests/quizzes/ and papers and do not cary the same weight as these major assignments. It earns points similar to journal entries for class, class participation, peer-critiques, and overall work ethics. The bonus points earned should be non-threatening and reflects an individual's endeavors to elicit as much as they can from all their learning experiences in AP LIterature. When I am looking over a student's progress in my class, bonus points can help me better determine a student's self-initiative in regards to completion of assignments for class. If you have any questions, comments or concerns we can discuss as a class. I hope this helps everyone undertand better how bonus points factor towards your overall grade. Take care.
See you soon... Ms. Donnelly

Ohh, I see. So it's like gaining your respect in a sense? Like...each person's bonus points reflect they're conscientiousness in this class, ya?
Okay, I get it now.
Thanks for clarifying, Ms. Donnelly.

Hi Everyone,
I was glad to see more of you engaged and participating.

Hi Everyone,
Let's keep the blog going over the winterbreak. I will be asking everyone to pick out their new novel for Quarter 3. This will be a great way to keep in touch regarding our literary endeavors.

I've just atarted reading a new book for my book club, titled, The Northen Clemency, by Philip Hensher. It's a fat book about 475 pages...that she keep me busy for the winterbreak. Send me the title of your book and author once you have selected your literary work for personal novel.
See you all tomorrow.
Take care.
Ms. Donnelly

I still haven't chosen a book. Ill get around it though. I was thinking about a few books. Maybe something contemporary, or a little science fiction. I've always wanted to read dune, I should get that. Ender's game is supposed to be pretty good for science fiction as well, thats another option. Hm, well I should get around to choosing something.

When i was reading the expert opinion, i saw that the reason why Sula's character is so influencial is because of her lack of structure as a person. I think that Toni Morrison tries to bring that same lack of structure to most of the story. It's very choppy and sporatic to me.

yeah according to my expert sula lacks a foundation upon what black women are supposed to be in the bottom. All of the black women in the bottom are expected to get married, take care of a man and have kids. Sula defies this by going away to college for a large amount of years and then returning and still refusing to conform to the foundational structure of a woman that the bottom wants her to be. Yea...

Lack structure as a person? I'm not sure what that "expert" meant by it, but I don't think Sula "lacked a structure;" she had her own principles, and I think that's enough to make her up...

Luke's comment is clearer on what Sula lacks, and I could agree with that.

I would say that if anything, Sula lacks a norm that she conforms to (like Luke had mentioned). But I think that with this mindset, she is able to create her own structure--it is not traditional, but it is still a very strong belief of what she feels is right. Many times, I feel that Sula is not the one that it lost trying to find her identity in the story. For example, it is Nel who realizes that it is not Jude she misses, but instead it was the friendship she had with Sula that had been torn apart that she longed for. Perhaps in some way, because Sula may appear so "unstructured?" we can learn to be like her.
